Exercises and exercises
In the first weeks we started practicing.
I had never seriously picked up signs at that time and that is also visible.
In the first few assignments, I was meant to draw random subjects.
Eventually, combinations were made between words, as a kind of test in creativity.
Then came the first “big” drawing command: an Anti-Portrait.
I generally work very accurately and digitally, both things I was not allowed to do now.
I signed an Anti-Portret on paper with pastel chalk within 5 minutes for this assignment.
Key-words
After the above-mentioned assignments came the following:
A classmate pointed out words from which I had to choose 5 keywords.
These keywords were created a mind map.
This mind map is then used to create a Mood & Styleboard.
The image indicates which words are assigned to the left.
On the right side, these words have been converted into a mind map
Based on those 5 words, we had to make a sketch for our avatar.
Those 5 sketches are visible at the bottom right, my very first digital sketches.
Mood & Style-board
The next assignment was to create a mood & style board.
The mood board had to portray the idea of the project.
The style board out more denotes the (art) style and color palette.
I went for a simpler approach that affects style and alternative as a mood.
The Avatar
This is the biggest project to date: creating the avatar.
This assignment is all about the student:
To design an avatar that expresses you.
I learned a lot during this project.
This is the first project where I have taken drawing seriously.
I had never signed digitally before for this project.
I used multiple references to help me.
I ran into anatomy and shadows, especially the first.
In the end I am proud that I succeeded; the anatomy worked out well.
I can still grow in adding shadows in my work.
In my second impression I want to work with more colors and textures.
Second Impression
“Purple” Hands
This project drew inspiration from the game “OMORI”.
From there I wanted to add my own version of the “red hands”.
Red hands are a metaphor for creativity,
But also for the reluctance of perfectionism.
I started analyzing forms in reference art.
From in the beginning, trace it to finally try it yourself.
I finally copied the first hand and arm to position four.
I colored these purple with a chalk brush.
I chose purple because I have been associating myself with it for a while.
In the end, I chose to animate the hands.
Then I added VFX with a glitch theme.
In the end I changed the colors a bit in Premiere.
This was an intensive but fun project;
I have learned to draw digitally and to orientate myself in it.
I also learned that my original plan for this project was too ambitious.
In the end I am still very happy with the end result,
that you can look at down here.
